Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an herbal remedy and most commonly used in Ayurveda. Ashwagandha is also called 'Indian ginseng' due to its rejuvenating effects. The Ashwagandha plant is a small woody shrub with small flowers and red seeds. The plant can grow upto 200 cm height. Ashwagandha naturally occurs in most areas of South Asia and is widely found in India. It is a member of the Solanaceae family and the plant has a dominant central stem which support radially extending branches. The ashwagandha fruit is a bright red berry. Both the fruit and the roots are used for the medicinal purposes. The roots of Ashwagandha are a long thick structure and the leaves of the plant are simple leaves, generally about 8-12 cm in length. Ashwagandha seeds are small and less than 1 cm in diameter. The plant flowers are small and possess a greenish yellow color. The word Aswhagandha in Sanskrit means 'smell of a horse'; as the ground root has a smell that is reminiscent of a horse.
